About Hearing

How our auditory system works

Our sense of balance comes from three main systems working together: the inner ear, the eyes, and sensors in the muscles and joints. The inner ear detects motion and head position, the eyes provide visual cues, and the body sends signals about posture and movement. The brain combines all this information to keep us steady. If one part of the system isn’t working properly, it can create dizziness, imbalance, or vertigo.

Do I need a GP referral?
How long does a hearing assessment take?
Can ear wax affect the results?

Yes. A build-up of wax can block sound and affect the accuracy of your test results. If we notice significant wax, we’ll let you know and may recommend removal before continuing. We work closely with Just Ears, a specialist wax removal service, and can help you arrange an appointment if needed so that your assessment is as accurate as possible.
What should I bring with me?
Are there any risks involved?

No. Hearing assessments are safe, painless, and non-invasive. Some people may notice temporary sounds like buzzing or light pressure in the ear during certain tests, but these pass quickly and do not cause harm. If you have any medical conditions or concerns, let your clinician know so the assessment can be tailored to you.

We understand that plans can change. If you need to rearrange, we’re always happy to reschedule your appointment with no charge when you give at least 48 hours’ notice.

More than 48 hours’ notice: Full refund or free reschedule

24–48 hours’ notice: 75% refund

Less than 24 hours’ notice: No refund, but we’ll do our best to find you the next available slot
