How our auditory system works
When you hear a sound, soundwaves travel down your ear canal toward the eardrum. The soundwaves vibrate the eardrum on contact and these vibrations are passed through three tiny bones in the middle ear – the ossicles.
The ossicles convey the vibrations to the inner ear via the oval window. Once the soundwaves pass through the oval window they enter the cochlea which is fluid filled, so the vibrations become a travelling wave in the fluid and it is this travelling wave that stimulates a part of the cochlea called the basilar membrane which contains the sensory cells which are responsible for our sense of hearing.
Any issue or abnormality at any of constituent parts of the pathway outlined above can lead to hearing loss and this is where diagnostic tests are essential.
